BING creates music that is a confluence of grooves and sounds from many diverse sources worldwide. A melody might be derived from American rhythm-and-blues, filtered through harmonies based on an Indonesian scale from Java and set to the pulsating rhythms of early 70s Ethiopian pop music. Soulful vocals, improvisations and modern electronics are prominent elements of BING's sound, yet the music is nothing like any soul, jazz, funk or electronic music you've ever heard before. While steering away from recognizable references to "World Beat", BING strives for a fresh and dynamic approach to danceable music that pays homage to many musical traditions.
Co-founded by composer-performers Molly Sturges and Chris Jonas, BING is constantly challenging itself. November 2003, BING played to sold out audiences at Santa Fe's Lensic Performing Arts Center as the musical component to Circus Luminous, a new collaboration between BING, Wise Fool New Mexico (circus arts) and Moving People (dance) which will tour New Mexico Fall of 2005 and Colorado Summer of 2006. Earlier 2003, the group wrote and performed a live score for Buster Keaton's 1929 silent film Steamboat Bill, Jr., commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Albuquerque's historic KiMo Theater. Additionally, Bing performs on a regular basis to growing audiences in small theaters and venues around the West, touring Colorado, New Mexico and California Summer of 2004.
